Grizzlies Guard Nick Calathes Banned for 20 Matches for Positive Drug Test

Last Updated: April 22, 2014

Nicholas William "Nick" Calathes who currently plays for the Memphis Grizzlies of the NBA and the Greek national team is suspended for 20 games for positive drug test this Saturday.

According to the reports tamoxifen (a banned drug) was found in the test which is a drug used for treating patients of Breast Cancer. The Greek-American professional basketball player who plays as guard for the team had a negative test result for any traces of testosterone (the resulting product of using tamoxifen). So it proved an advantage was still not gained from the use of that drug.

“The NBA's lab results showed no traces of testosterone or PED in supplement. There was no intent here," the league officials said.

Grizzlies tried to persuade the league official on the basis that no advantage was gained but was all in vain. They decided ban for 20 matches with immediate effect.

Hardwood Paroxysm tweeted:

“there it is RT @NBAPR: MEM's N. Calathes suspended twenty games for violating NBA/NBPA Anti-Drug Program (positive test for tamoxifen),”

Adrian Wojnarowski tweeted :

“Memphis guard Nick Calathes will be suspended 20 games for violation of NBA's Anti-Drug policy, source tells Yahoo. Suspension starts now.”

Though the official decision will come on Sunday about the suspension it seems “Grizzlies” will miss one of their key players when opening its first-round Western Conference playoff series against the Oklahoma City Thunder on Saturday night.
