Mike D'Antoni Resigns From Post As Lakers Head Coach

Last Updated: May 02, 2014

Mike D'Antoni, 52, resigned as coach of Los Angeles Lakers after two seasons. The decision was obvious as everyone knew about the conflict between the head coach and key players of the team, and the performance of last season.

Although D'Antoni had one season left in his deal but he wouldn’t continue as coach. The Lakers have not attached a timeline to their coaching search, but the process is expected to start immediately.

Given the circumstances, I don’t know that anybody could have done a better job than Mike did the past two seasons. We thank Mike for the work ethic, professionalism & positive attitude that he brought to the team every day. We wish him the best of luck, said Lakers GM Kupchak.

The last season was historically worst for Lakers and it seemed obvious that there would be some changes. The winning percentage came down to 32.9% this season which decided the fate of D'Antoni.

The first NBA coaching job held by D'Antoni was with the Denver Nuggets in 1997–98 as the club's director of player personnel. He also did some broadcasting work with TNT during that season. The next year, he became Nuggets head coach, but was fired after a poor performance during the lockout-shortened 1998-99 season. On November 12, 2012, the Lakers signed D'Antoni to a three-year contract worth $12 million. He replaced Mike Brown, who was fired as head coach after a 1–4 start to the 2012–13 season.
