Legendary singer Reshma passes away

 

Legendary Pakistani folk singer Reshma, who mesmerised music lovers in the Indian subcontinent with soulful rendition of songs like 'Dama Dam Mast Kalandar' and 'Lambi Judai' in her trademark rustic voice, passed away in Lahore today after a prolonged battle with throat cancer.

Born around 1947 in Bikaner, Rajasthan, in a Banjara family, Reshma was under treatment after being diagnosed with the disease years ago. She is survived by son Umair and daughter Khadija.

Reshma, a recipient of the Sitara-e-Imtiaz, also known throughout the region as “Bulbul-e-Sehra” (the desert nightingale), died at a hospital in the provincial capital on Sunday morning. She was suffering from throat cancer for a long time. According to hospital sources, Reshma was in coma for a month after being diagnosed with cancer some years ago.

Reshma was one of the most popular folk singers of Pakistan, appearing on television in the 1960s and recording songs for both the Pakistani as well as the Indian film industry. When she was just 12 years old, a television and radio producer spotted her singing at Shahbaz Qalandar’s shrine. The producer arranged for her to record “Laal Meri” on Radio Pakistan and she became an instant hit.

She was diagnosed with throat cancer in the 1980s. In later years her health deteriorated, she was hospitalised on April 6, 2013.

Chief Minister Shahbaz Sharif took special interest in providing maximum medical assistance to this great and unique singer of the subcontinent, the only one of her kind. Reshma went into coma in October 2013 and died on the early morning of November 3 in the hospital.

Her body was taken to her home in Imamia Colony, and she was buried in a local graveyard later the same day. Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif paid a visit to her house to condole her death with her family. Nawaz is a great admirer of music and expressed his feelings over this national loss with Reshma’s family and prayed for the departed soul.
