Kerry apologized for apartheid remarks to Israel

Last Updated: May 01, 2014

The US secretary of state, John Kerry, has apologized for warning last Friday that Israel risked becoming an "apartheid state" if it did not reach a peace deal with the Palestinians, following a barrage of criticism in America. Few days after the statement he realized there is a strong criticism from Democrats and Israeli leaders on the used words. They wanted his resignation or public apology on this. Not wasting his time Kerry apologized on Monday and gave the following statement.

"I will not allow my commitment to Israel to be questioned by anyone, particularly for partisan, political purposes, so I want to be crystal clear about what I believe and what I don't believe," he said.

"First, Israel is a vibrant democracy and I do not believe, nor have I ever stated, publicly or privately, that Israel is an apartheid state or that it intends to become one," he said.

"Secondly, I have been around long enough to also know the power of words to create a misimpression, even when unintentional, and if I could rewind the tape, I would have chosen a different word to describe my firm belief that the only way in the long term to have a Jewish state and two nations and two peoples living side by side in peace and security is through a two-state solution," he added.

Kerry’s statement came at a crucial time as Israeli Leaders just suspended the Peace process agreement between “Palestine Liberation Organization” and “Hamas” for a united government.

John Kerry wasn't the first to use the A-word apartheid when talking about Israel, and he likely won't be the last. Even some Israeli leaders have mentioned the word that basically means "separate" in describing the eventual result if a Jewish state had a Palestinian majority in some areas, such as currently exists in the West Bank.

As per Israeli Leaders Israel can either be a non-democratic or non-Jewish country so they prefer non involvement of Palestinian in politics and to have no right to vote in Israel. This was mentioned by Kerry as a policy to bring a future apartheid states where there are no equal rights.
