Last night’s World Cup Group E match saw Didier Deschamp’s France line up against Ottmar Hitzfeld’s Switzerland. Both France and Switzerland having been knocked out in the group stages 4 years back in South Africa, were determined to keep things ticking this time after winning their first games against Honduras and Ecuador.

Switzerland wore their customary Red while France were in their white away strip. In excellent whether conditions the matched kicked off. Switzerland enjoyed lengthy spells of possession as France looked to counter attack. The deadlock was broken when France got a corner in 17th minute of the game and it was Arsenal forward Olivier Giroud who scored from Mathieu Valbuena’s delivery. That goal led the flood gates open as 20 seconds later Blaise Matuidi was put through on goal by Karim Benzema and he scored his first goal of the World Cup. The Swiss chasing the game from two goals down were looking more vulnerable at the back and France on the other hand were unstoppable on the counter attack. Karim Benzema missed a penalty in the 32nd minute after he himself was fouled in the penalty area by Djourou. France however did score another just 8 minutes later when Mathieu Valbuena was on target from Giroud’s pass as the first half ended with France leading by 3 goals.

The second half began in similar fashion for France as substitute Paul Pogba showed his glimpse of genius when he made the pass for Karim Benzema to score France’s 4th goal. There was no way back for Switzerland as Moussa Sissoko added another goal for France in the 73rd minute. Blerim Dzemaili and Granit Xhaka gave the Swiss two consolation goals in the final 10 minutes of the match but the match was out of their hands. Full time whistle was blown! France won 5-2 – leaving them in Pole position in Group E. While Swiss will have to fight it out against Honduras in the last group match on June 25th.
